Running FreeBSD 12.0 With Intel Xeon Scalable Cascade Lake / Gigabyte S451-3R0 Server, Benchmarks Against Linux
In the case of the basic SQLite benchmark, FreeBSD 12.0 with ZFS was edging out slightly faster than Clear Linux, Ubuntu, and openSUSE while CentOS 7 with its default XFS setup was running noticeably slower.
But when running the more I/O demanding BlogBench that simulates the workload of a web server, openSUSE Leap and Ubuntu 18.04.2 were the fastest for reads while Ubuntu and Clear Linux were fastest for writes while FreeBSD 12.0 was the slowest in both of these tests.
FreeBSD also remains slower than the Linux distributions with the IOzone synthetic I/O benchmark but at least was by less of a margin compared to BlogBench.
Under CompileBench, FreeBSD 12.0 with ZFS was similar to CentOS 7 with XFS.
