Linux OS Distributions vs. Microsoft Windows vs. FreeBSD + Other BSDs

First up was the SQLite embedded database library benchmark. Of the BSDs tested, DragonFlyBSD with its new HAMMER2 file-system was running the fastest and with the 5.3 development release that offers various new kernel optimizations the performance was in between the batch of Linux distributions tested. The other BSDs tended to be slightly slower than the Linux distributions while Windows 10 with NTFS by far was the slowest in this particular database benchmark.

Under the Compile Bench I/O benchmark, FreeBSD was performing about the speed of CentOS Linux 7. FreeBSD 12.0-CURRENT was coming in as much slower than 11.1/11.2, which may be due to debugging flags or other settings of that current development release. While DragonFlyBSD was very fast with SQLite, it was by far the slowest in Compile Bench while OpenBSD 6.3 settled in between FreeBSD and DragonFly.

In the BLAKE2 application crypto test, the performance of the BSDs was right in line with the Linux distributions and Windows 10 with this mostly being a function of the compiler performance. FreeBSD 11.2 Beta 3 on Clang 6.0 had a very slight lead.

The Golang performance on the BSDs appear to be much slower than Windows 10 and Linux for this popular systems programming language.
