AMD Radeon Gallium3D Starting To Out-Run Catalyst In Some Cases

For the OpenArena 0.8.5 release, the old Catalyst driver from 2010 on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is still faster than the modern-day Radeon Gallium3D stack. However, the performance has matured nicely for the open-source AMD Linux driver on each of the releases tested. Ubuntu 13.04's stock driver is the better part of three times faster than on Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

From Ubuntu 12.04.1 LTS to Ubuntu 13.04 it looks like there may be a regression in the OpenArena 0.8.8 performance for the Radeon HD 4830.

World of Padman is still faster on a AMD Catalyst driver from 2010 than on the open-source Radeon stack from today. However, the frame-rate for this ioquake3 game has nearly doubled going from Ubuntu 12.04 LTS to the Ubuntu 13.04 snapshot.
