It is not often that we look at audio products at Phoronix. Usually we are looking at sound cards with their Linux driver, like the Creative X-Fi Linux fiasco and the ALSA drivers for high-end sound cards. Occasionally we will look at gaming headphones and we have even looked at multi-million dollar home theaters, but in this review, we are checking out PC speakers, a simple 2.1 speaker system. The folks over at Xoxide recently sent out the Altec Lansing VS2421 speaker system, which we are testing out this morning.

Features:

- Full-range 2.5" Speakers
- Slim 5.25" Subwoofer
- Built-in Microphone
- Small Footprint
- Ultra-convenient Controls
- Wall Mountable Design
- MP3 Player Jack
- Headphone Jack

The box containing the Altec Lansing VS2421 speaker system was quite small and about half the size (or smaller) than the higher-end 2.1 Altec Lansing MX5021 speaker system we had looked at a number of years ago. The left and right speakers have only 2.5" drivers, the subwoofer is just 5.25” in size, and its box is rather slim. This speaker system is also rather on the light side. The Altec Lansing subwoofer was wrapped in a lightweight foam bag and the two speakers along with the control unit were wrapped in plastic. Two cardboard molds ensured that nothing moved around while in transit. Beyond the subwoofer and left and right speakers there was the VS2421 user's guide, two speaker stands, and the control unit. All of the cables for this 2.1 speaker system came pre-attached.
