Of 96 benchmarks ran for this article, the Core i9 10980XE managed to come in first place 55% of the time to the Threadripper 2990WX in first 37% of the time.

With the 96 benchmarks, the Core i9 10980XE delivered about ~9% higher performance over the more expensive Threadripper 2990WX and about 12% higher performance than the Core i9 7980XE Skylake-X processor.

The performance-per-dollar of the Core i9 10980XE if it indeed ends up in retail channels at around $979 is very competitive at least to the existing Threadripper processors.

At just under $1000 USD, the Core i9 10980XE does offer much better value than past X-series CPUs while delivering incrementally better performance over the Core i9 7980XE. The Linux support with i9-10980XE and new X299 motherboards like the Gigabyte X299X DESIGNARE 10G is in great shape assuming you are on any semi-recent Linux distribution. Under Ubuntu 19.10 and even Ubuntu 19.04, the Intel Cascade Lake support is in good standing while of course the newer kernels and compilers can generally lead to better performance.
