Ubuntu 12.10 Is Faster With Intel Hardware
Turning now to some of the processor benchmarks, first up are the NAS Parallel Benchmarks from NASA.
The NAS Parallel Benchmarks were also noticeably faster with Ubuntu 12.10 over Ubuntu 12.04. The reason for the improvements here is because of the switch from GCC 4.6 to GCC 4.7. GCC 4.7 brings greater support for Intel's latest-generation Ivy Bridge processors plus some all-around performance optimizations using this latest stable release series for the Free Software Foundation compiler.
The LAMMPS and FFTE workloads were minimally affected when upgrading Ubuntu Linux.
