Running The New Intel OpenGL "Crocus" Gallium3D Driver On Sandy Bridge
YQuake2 was performing much faster on i965 over Crocus for the Sandy Bridge HD Graphics.
Crocus also performed quite poorly on Sandy Bridge for the GLMark2 synthetic benchmarks.
The Paraview workstation visualization software saw mixed results between Crocus and i965 on Sandy Bridge.
Crocus did yield better Java OpenGL performance for text rendering but in the other test cases tended to come up short.
Long story short, Crocus is working for Sandy Bridge but wasn't nearly as competitive to i965 as what we saw during our initial testing with Haswell graphics. Haswell on Crocus appears to be in much better shape and in relation to the i965 classic driver than Sandy Bridge, but with time Crocus will likely improve as well on these older Intel Gen graphics. Especially if Mesa developers move ahead in dropping the classic drivers from the mainline tree, Crocus will likely need to show it can be a viable replacement to i965.
