FIO random reads and writes were much faster on EXT4 over ZFS, at least with out-of-the-box settings on Ubuntu 19.10 with this sole NVMe SSD.

But ZFS did deliver slightly better sequential read performance compared to EXT4 on Linux 5.3.

One synthetic benchmark where ZFS On Linux was a great deal faster than EXT4 was FS-Mark.

But in the other I/O benchmarks, EXT4 tended to lead compared to this out-of-tree ZFS On Linux support.
