Geometric Mean Of All Test Results benchmark with settings of Result Composite, Fedora 39 AMD Ryzen Laptop Benchmarks. Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U was the fastest.

Those wishing to checkout all of the AMD Ryzen ThinkPad laptop benchmarks I ran for this comparison along with all of the individual power metrics can do so via this OpenBenchmarking.org page. When looking at the geometric mean from the Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U to Ryzen 7 PRO 7840U, the Zen 3+ to Zen 4 generational improvement was 43% faster for the dozens of CPU as well as integrated GPU benchmarks carried out. Or if comparing the new Zen 4 laptop performance to that of Zen 2 from 2020, in three years it is a 88% jump for these Fedora 39 Linux benchmarks.

Here is the CPU power consumption across the range of benchmarks carried out for these different Lenovo ThinkPad laptops. The average power consumption was higher than prior ThinkPad models tested but the peak still lower than the Ryzen 7 47800U. The Ryzen 7 PRO 6850U did lead in many of the benchmarks for having the best power efficiency but the ThinkPad model and its hardware and firmware characteristics play a role there as well. Depending upon the laptop model as well as its ACPI Platform Profile behavior there the laptop power characteristics can be quite different.

In any event if you've been thinking about upgrading your Linux laptop this holiday season, hopefully this ThinkPad AMD generational comparison on Fedora 39 was helpful. Again see this result page for even more benchmark results. If you enjoy these benchmarks consider joining Phoronix Premium to help make more of this Linux hardware testing possible. After all, each and every one of these ThinkPads I purchased over the years as a customer to ultimately provide this independent, hard Linux performance data without any support from AMD or Lenovo for these laptops.
