Intel Details Rocket Lake S Processors, Linux Benchmarks To Come
Intel today is publicly detailing their 11th Gen "Rocket Lake S" processors. Here is what you need to know about Rocket Lake S although we cannot yet share any Linux performance figures until that later Rocket Lake S review embargo lift date.
As has been reported previously with Rocket Lake S there is an IPC improvement of up to 19% thanks to this backport of the Cypress Cove core back to 14nm-based process. Rocket Lake S also allows up to twenty PCIe 4.0 lanes, Deep Learning Boost / VNNI support, and DDR4-3200 memory support.
Besides the CPU core improvements, quite exciting is the integrated graphics in finally phasing out Gen9 graphics! Gen12 Xe graphics are finally coming to the desktop... Well, except for the Core i3 / Pentium parts still using the UHD Graphics 600 series. We are very eager for testing Gen12 graphics on the desktop under Linux especially for compute / oneAPI Level Zero. With Gen12 on the media side also means AV1 10-bit decode, 12-bit HEVC, HDMI 2.0 on the display side, and other improvements as well. For those with discrete graphics, Rocket Lake S does support resizable BAR.
The top-end Core i9 11900K is sadly an 8 core / 16 thread part as with their back-port to 14nm were not able to accommodate any additional cores, cut down from the 10 cores / 20 threads with the i9-10900K. The Core i9 11900K features a 3.5GHz base clock, Turbo Boost up to 5.1GHz, TBM 3.0 clock up to 5.2GHz, and a Thermal Velocity Boost single core frequency of 5.3GHz or 4.8GHz for the all-core frequency. The all-core turbo frequency is 4.7GHz. The Core i9 11900K has a 125 Watt TDP and is fully unlocked. The i9-11900K features Gen12-based UHD Graphics 750.
One of the most anticipated elements of Rocket Lake S has been the pricing... The Core i9 11900K features a $539 USD price tag, which is rather sharp for an 8 core processor in 2021 and compared to the normal retail pricing on the Ryzen 9 5900 series albeit short supplies have sharply inflated those prices.
