If you are thinking of buying a low-capacity, affordable solid-state drive (SSD) as a stocking stuffer this holiday season or just looking for a new SSD without breaking the bank, here are benchmarks from eight different low-cost solid-state drives done on Ubuntu Linux with the EXT4 file-system.

With having recently picked up new Intel 535 SSDs and Samsung 850 SSDs, I built upon my earlier comparison on the Core i7 5960X to offer a eight-way look atop the Linux 4.2 kernel with EXT4.

The SSDs tested for this article were the:

OCZ TRION 100 120GB @ $50 USD
Silicon Power 120GB S60 @ $43 USD
Samsung 850 EVO 120GB @ $67 USD
Transcend 370 MLC 256GB @ $81 USD
Crucial BX100 120GB @ $66 USD
Intel 535 Series 120GB @ $69 USD
ADATA SP600 128GB @ $43 USD
PNY CS1211 120GB @ $81 USD

All the solid state drives were tested from the same Ubuntu 15.10. Each drive was freshly formatted and using the EXT4 file-system with the default mount options.

These Linux disk tests were all done using the open-source Phoronix Test Suite benchmarking software.
