With the Qt4-based QGears2 test and using the X RENDER back-end, the Radeon graphics cards on the Catalyst 14.4 Linux graphics driver were delivering the best 2D performance. Worth pointing out though is that the Radeon R9 290 "Hawaii" performance was running slower than the HD 7950 / R9 270X with some of the 2D operations.

Aside from the Radeon HD 7950 that was running abnormally slow, the R9 270X and R9 290 were running well and right in line with the NVIDIA hardware for the lone Cairo benchmark.
