In total I ran 56 benchmarks on both the Intel Core i9 14900K and AMD Ryzen 9 7950X desktops across Ubuntu 22.04.4, Ubuntu 23.10, and Ubuntu 24.04 LTS for this fresh round of Ubuntu Linux desktop benchmarking. All the data for those interested can be found here.

The upgrade from Ubuntu 23.10 to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS didn't mean much for these Intel/AMD x86_64 desktops given their mature support even to last year's interim release. But in some cases Ubuntu 24.04 LTS did deliver better performance, such as for the open-source AMD Radeon RDNA3 graphics. The Ubuntu 24.04 upgrade is much more impactful if you have been relying on Ubuntu 22.04 LTS as the existing Long Term Support series. If jumping from Ubuntu 22.04 LTS to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS there can be some very nice performance benefits on the same hardware.

For those wondering about the CPU power consumption between releases, there wasn't too much change. The peak CPU power use for both the Core i9 14900K and Ryzen 9 7950X were unchanged but a slight uptick in average power use on Ubuntu 24.04 LTS. The Intel Core i9 14900K went from a 125 Watt average on Ubuntu 23.10 to now 132 Watts with Ubuntu 24.04, but that's still lower than the 139 Watt average found on Ubuntu 22.04. Meanwhile the AMD Ryzen 9 7950X power average was consistently in the 113~115 Watt range.
