The $199 Motile M141 With AMD Ryzen 3 3200U Offers Surprisingly Decent Performance
I wouldn't recommend using a $199 laptop for any demanding scientific workloads, but curiosity got the best of me for how the Ryzen 3 3200U would perform... Basically the Ryzen 3 3200U in these demanding CPU benchmarks was comparable to Intel Core i7 CPUs from Broadwell~Haswell or older, which isn't too surprising from the days of Core i7 CPUs being 2c/4t.
In the dav1d video decoding test the Ryzen 3 3200U was funny enough not far behind the Intel Core i7 1065G7 Ice Lake system. In these cases, that's due to the Dell XPS Ice Lake hitting thermal throttling fairly quickly in the demanding multi-threaded tests. The Motile M141 has surprisingly good cooling and haven't noticed any thermal related issues with this budget laptop.
Due to the Dell XPS Ice Lake laptop running hot, the $199 Ryzen 3 3200U could even build the Linux kernel slightly quicker than the i7-1065G7!
Still, anyone doing frequent code compilation would be better off with a higher-end laptop.
