Xonotic with high-quality settings does indicate a 61% performance improvement between Mesa 7.9 and the forthcoming Mesa 8.1.

How do these performance improvements now put the open-source Radeon driver performance in comparison to Catalyst? That will be coming in a more exhaustive article later in the month with a wide selection of hardware when Mesa 8.1 is ready for release. There will also be these "historical" benchmarks done for other Mesa/Gallium3D drivers too. Other benchmark requests are welcome.
