For those curious about the Windows vs. Linux performance, on the same system (Threadripper 3970X + TITAN RTX), Ubuntu 20.04.1 LTS was compared to Windows 10 Pro Insider Preview Build 20175 for looking at how Blender 2.90 is comparing between Linux and Windows. The current NVIDIA 450/455 driver series on Windows/Linux were used for testing.

With Blender 2.90 making use of CUDA, Windows was generally delivering slightly better performance than Linux.

With the NVIDIA OptiX performance on the TITAN RTX, the results on this system were close but in some of the scenes at least Windows had a measurable advantage over the Ubuntu setup.

But where Ubuntu Linux was performing much stronger than Microsoft Windows 10 was with the CPU-based rendering performance. As we see time and time again in heavy CPU benchmarks, Linux was performing better than Windows.
