Linux 3.14 May Bring Big VMware GPU Driver Update

Thomas Hellstrom of VMware sent in their first pull request today of "vmwgfx" driver changes for the Linux 3.14 kernel, but it looks like the best is yet to come.

Thomas Hellstrom, a longtime Linux graphics contributor going back to the Tungsten Graphics days, sent in request 1 to David Airlie on the mailing list today. This first vmwgfx-next pull request for their virtual GPU driver to provide guest acceleration on virtual machines with VMware's products isn't too exciting. The first pull request has just code clean-ups and TTM memory management security improvements. However, Thomas noted in his mailing list message that he "[hopes] to squeeze in one more [pull request] with a huge device update."

It's not guaranteed that this huge device update for VMware's virtual GPU Linux DRM driver will be ready for the Linux 3.14 kernel, but we'll see in the coming days if it works out. There's no details public yet on all what's involved with this update.

Thomas also sent in the TTM-next pull request for 3.14 this morning, but that isn't particularly exciting.
