While the re-clocking failed, the Nouveau vs. NVIDIA Linux driver performance was still tested to see how the "out of the box" experience compares on Ubuntu 12.10 between the open and closed-source drivers.

NVIDIA 304.43 is the binary driver in the Quantal repository at the moment and then mentioned already the open-source stack consists of the Linux 3.5 kernel DRM, Mesa 9.0 Gallium3D, and xf86-video-nouveau 1.0.2.

The Nouveau performance in terms of the raw OpenGL performance for different Linux native games was rather nice on Ubuntu 12.10 compared to the NVIDIA 304.43 binary driver when factoring in that the Quadro FX 880M with Nouveau is running at 73% the clock speed of the binary driver and the video RAM frequency is at 41% the speed of the binary blob.
