An Introduction To Intel's Tremont Microarchitecture

Tremont features many microarchitecture improvements compared to Goldmont Plus, but how long we'll be waiting for the likes of Intel Lakefield processors could be drawn out with Intel not eager to provide anytimeline on shipping Tremont cores.

The instructions/technologies being talked about today are Total Memory Encryption (TME), accelerator interfacing instructions, Intel Speed Shift, and Intel Trusted Execution Technology (TXT). There is also GFNI SSE, ENCLV, and other new instructions not mentioned on this slide.

The single-threaded performance is much better than Goldmont Plus and the relative power/performance is also a big uplift over Sunny Cove with Icelake.

With Intel's open-source developers already working on Tremont enablement as we have covered in Phoronix articles over recent months, the Linux support should be in good shape by the time Tremont cores begin shipping in a variety of low-power devices in the future. When that time comes, we'll be here with Linux benchmarks.
