Enlightenment E19 Can Act As A Wayland Compositor
Enlightenment's Wayland ambitions are becoming a reality with Enlightenment E19 set to support operating as its own Wayland compositor using some interesting technology.
Enlightenment and its EFL toolkit have been at the forefront of supporting Wayland since last year. Following the landmark E17 release late last year, E18 development began with plans to release in 2013. E18 has improved Wayland handling, but the E19 successor will be even better.
A few days ago E19 and "Project Burrito" were mentioned on the E19 release manager blog. On Thursday was a much more interesting post.
Enlightenment's Wayland support is up to the point that E19 can act as a Wayland compositor itself rather than just a shell to the reference Weston compositor. Beyond that, Enlightenment developers have E18 able to run a Xephyr session managed by E19 that in turn has a Wayland-only E19 compositor running inside. All of this can be done dynamically without any reconfiguration or recompilation.
