A Curious Look At Eight Core Server CPU Performance From Intel Xeon Haswell To AMD EPYC Rome

Obviously for nearly all the workloads the EPYC 7232P / 7262 processors exhibited much stronger performance than the Intel Haswell Xeon performance for anyone still having one of those setups still running in production.

Out of 40+ benchmarks run for this article, the EPYC 7232P was running 15% faster than the E5-1680 v3 while the EPYC 7262 was 30% faster than that Intel CPU which once retailed for $1700+ compared to these EPYC Rome 8c/16t CPUs in the $500~600 price range. As a reminder, the Xeon E3-1680 v3 and EPYC 7262 are both 8 cores / 16 threads and have the same base clock frequency.

For those wanting to see how their own Linux system(s) compete with these benchmarks, simply install the Phoronix Test Suite and run phoronix-test-suite benchmark 2003275-NI-EPYC7262L37. If/when I get my hands on an 8c/16t Cascade Lake processor, I'll run some head-to-head benchmarks on that front.
