Ubuntu 12.04 LTS KVM Virtualization Battles 8.04.4, 10.04.4 LTS

When benefiting from the GCC 4.6 compiler with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS on both metal and virtualized conditions, HMMer was slightly faster than Ubuntu 10.04.4 and much faster than Ubuntu 8.04.4. This was also the case for MAFFT.

Building the Linux kernel is also slightly faster when done under an Ubuntu 12.04 stack.

C-Ray is noticeably faster with Ubuntu 12.04 LTS, which is attributed to the GCC 4.6 compiler. For both AMD and Intel hardware, other Phoronix articles with GCC 4.6 benchmarks have shown nice speed-ups for this multi-threaded ray-tracer.
