Phoronix: GNOME Merge Requests Opened That Would Drop X.Org Session Support

A set of merge requests were opened that would effectively drop X.Org (X11) session support for the GNOME desktop and once that code is removed making it a Wayland-only desktop environment...

Interesting. After updating to Gnome 44 on Arch, I haven't been able to use Wayland when my laptop is connected to a dock. It starts to switch between modes, flashing the screens, after which it locks up. Totally unusable. 43 used to work.

Some examples of issues with Gnome + Wayland:

    Freezes with nvidia: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/819
Does not support two monitors: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/812
    No GUI: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/798
    No nvidia support: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/616
    Another unsupported combo: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gdm/-/issues/858
    No remote login: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome...-/issues/92
    No multiseat support: https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome..._requests/2230
    etc.

They are just removing some files which can be installed separately. One more package for every distro.

Or nvidia users. Not everybody is rich enough to buy an amd graphics card to replace their existing nvidia graphics card. xwayland still has tons of graphical glitches with nvidia and even when using pure wayland on nvidia there are tons of software crashes. Nvidia has been making patches in xwayland and other parts but it hasn't been merged for over 1 year now.

This would be a great loss to Gnome, not the Luddites. Why? Wayland is mostly Linux only while Xorg is FreeBSD/OpenBSD/NetBSD/etc.

Lastly, there's something solid behind Xorg and I tend to believe that one day people will get fed up with Wayland and introduce something saner, something more appropriate for the desktop. Xorg/X11 will most likely survive and outlive both Wayland and Gnome.

And you don't get fans by dropping support for something with a proven track record.

Nope, check the diff, they are dropping X11 support.

Wayland fans love to see NVIDIA users suffer.

Gnome's next move should be hiding their sources behind a paywall like RHEL. That would show the leeches and freeloaders behind Budgie, Pantheon, and the Ubuntu desktop who the real boss is.

Maybe find a new job? You can find some used amd hd7770 for 10-15 bucks. By selling your old nvidia you might even profit.

This is not a smart choice in my opinion as there's many end users (beginners) using Ubuntu or Fedora as a desktop and Wayland. This will ruin the out-of-the-box experience for the users having issues with Wayland (with Intel / NVIDIA muxed systems for example on laptops, which hasn't been fixed yet). Of course there's the option to switch to the terminal and just install the packages, but not all users are aware of this or have the experience to do so.

Wayland is just not suitable for daily use in all use cases. I say they'd need to give it 1 - 2 more years in my opinion.
