It never ceases to amaze me how well people can bury their heads in the sand. The switch to Wayland has been in the making for well over a decade. It's not like this is a new thing that was announced last month.

Yet a persistent group of people are gnawing and gnashing their teeth and clinging to the corpse of X11. Mostly people who want to party like it's 1999 and modeset in the XF86Config and Nvidia users who still haven't gotten the memo that daily driving Linux and using an Nvidia cards don't go that well together.

I had well over a decade to prepare for our New Compositor Overlord and I have no machines that can't drive Wayland. Then again, I also haven't had Nvidia hardware in over a decade, so no futzing with kernel upgrades and DKMS. I welcome our new Wayland powered desktops. Maybe it will be the fire that other WM's need to get going on their own wlroots compositors. It's long overdue.‚Äč

For some birds it was when Twitter renamed to X (shish, even the symbol is about the same) that was the last drop of using X11. The thought of being associated by a Dodge-coin meme:er is really a bad image.

This might introduce some inconveniences for people using fresh distos (like Ubuntu Current) because Wayland is not ready:

          * Color Management is still in early development
          * No Wide Color Gamut and HDR support
          * Emulated input just have been merged and not yet fully used by software (Barrier/Sinergy)
          * Flameshot still doesn't have an official build with Wayland support
          * Some games are slower under XWayland

And that's just from the top of my head.

Is there somewhere in public data about the Fedora DE usage? Gnome is the default, but it is an easy distribution to set your own and with many readily available spins. Even LXDE is an official spin. This might force them to switch away from Gnome as the default.

Well, it is not there for X11 either. So it is not a reason to complain.

How many linux users actually care about any of that? 1%?

RedHat is behind Fedora, Gnome and Wayland. Fedora will go ahead with this change (once it's approved) ASAP. Fedora was also one of the first distros to drop legacy Xorg drivers.

I remember Linux once prized itself for the best HW support out of the box, looks like times have changed. Dropping HW support is nowadays a welcome change because NVIDIA users must suffer.

I was expecting the link to be to some lesser known OS, DE, distro and/or window manager. Not lenghty ramblings.

If you mean display calibration, Gnome actually has it working on Wayland.

Um. X11 doesn't support that either.

                      Doesn't it work on XWayland?

There might be a few such games, but most games are actually a bit faster on Gnome's XWayland.
