The latter, very likely. "Indie" usually isn't used for "open source".

Of course not. Why use profits to open-source charities? It is a private business giving you a unique chance to fund your projects. Projects like OUYA funded on Kickstarter (android console) and so on. If you want to fund opensource charities, create a project and make it happen. the 4% fee its not unethical. If you hadn't a tool like indiegogo.com, you would propably couldn't raise ANY money for the open-source charities.

Its fair. its clear. its a tool.

You have solved all the other problems in this world and you are bothering about indiegogo.com ethic!

Is there a threshold for proceeds to the Indiegogo organisation?

Canonical should have never put users in this predicament if it is a scam.
You forgot to add the 3% paypal/credit card processing fee

even less towards a project funds

Probably Canonical and any other project founder have included to the total amount the costs for those tools (paypal, indiegogo) and probably if they had any better way to make it happen they would!

It might be, but is less an scam than I thought. Consider the case I thought it was, users actually lose their money in any case. Consider how it really is: users get a full refund if the goal is not met. If the goal is met but the phone doesn't materialize, then it's not IGG's fault, but Canonical's.

I agree that it's a bit too much, but I don't really care much about it, since I won't use it anyway.

              Serious companies usually get investors.

Why would he just give out free phones?
How about reading the damn article before you make a comment. They aren't donating out of the kindness of their hearts they're buying a mobile device.

It's probably an average that ensures that they can survive even when they get 0$ (probably less for transaction fees etc) for projecst that fails to reach there goal

Again, it isn't a matter of giving out free phones. Canonical isn't just asking people to pre-order the phone, they are asking people to help fund the development of the phone to completion.
