I don't think the problem today is only corporate lock-in. IM became mainstream at the same time as the PC and internet. Almost everyone had an email, but not all used IRC. IM like ICQ were easy to install, connect and use (way easier than IRC for the non geek), and now it's the same with Whatsaap, Viber etc.

Today is even harder to get people to use your app. It needs desktop and mobile clients, privacy, video and voice calls, file sharing etc etc etc... Some platforms let you edit documents with peers. So it's not just IM anymore.

I'm afraid this KDE Brooklyn will suffer the same fate as pidgin and others, unless they can do some dark magic and support all the different protocols.

And I thought most people used watsapp and FB messenger.

Hi, I'm the developer of Brooklyn. First of all, thank you for the article.
Sorry for my bad English but I'm not native.

Brooklyn is born to solve this problem inside KDE (especially on W2L).
It's not going to fail because it is doing the job is needed for.

It's not a multi-chat client. Please read the article more carefully

Again, it's not a "chat client"

We don't use none of them inside KDE but Brooklyn is modular, so feel free to implement a Slack/Gitter/Microsoft Teams bot.
          I'll appreciate it.

Java is the best choice for this project.
We should (I've to do that too) stop focusing on languages wars and more on choosing the right language for the right project.
Everytime someone creates a project in X there is always someone else arguing that X is not a good language.
Give it a try and tell me what's wrong

            Java is dead.

This project is at least 15 years late.

I refuse to use any JAVA apps so I guess I will just have to not use this one too.
