I do use icons on the desktop and always have been.
But was this ever really a good idea?
Or does it just lead to random stuff on the desktop instead of being properly sorted in the Documents, Videos, Pictures and Music folders?

You contradicted yourself there..."Desktop" is a folder itself to "properly sort" work-in-progress files. It makes every sense.

I've been using Fedora 27 on my main rig (16G mem) and Fedora 28 on my laptop (8G mem) with absolutely no problems. If memory leaks do exist, they aren't noticeable in day to day use.

Not noticeable, but nonetheless... watch -d -n 1 'pmap -p $(pidof gnome-shell) | tail'
