Intel Xeon Platinum 8380 "Ice Lake" Linux Performance One Year After Launch
The Kvazaar H.265 encoder is one of the workloads where the P-State performance governor is very important with the Xeon Platinum 8380 processors for ramping up quicker to the maximum performance state. In any case, with the software changes over the past year there are performance gains to enjoy on Ice Lake.
Intel's SVT-AV1 video encoder also saw small improvements in performance from updating the underlying operating systems while sticking to the same SVT-AV1... If moving to SVT-AV1 0.9 (or the imminent 1.0), there are performance gains even greater to find there.
Other open-source video encoders were also seeing small improvements out of running on the latest operating system packages.
One area that is slower with the newer distributions is the code compilation performance. Newer GCC (and LLVM Clang) compilers are often slower due to adding additional optimization passes and other features that can reduce the build speed performance in the name of greater debugging/features and/or faster run-time performance.
