Code compilation with GCC 11 was consistently faster on Ubuntu 22.04/21.10 than Ubuntu 20.04 with GCC 9.

But for most workloads don't expect any big changes out of Ubuntu 22.04 LTS on the AMD Ryzen 5000 series or as shown earlier even the Radeon RX 6000 series / RDNA2 has been quite stable since Ubuntu 21.10.

Overall the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS performance was steady on the AMD Ryzen 9 5950X + Radeon RX 6800 desktop used to kick off the start of our Jammy Jellyfish benchmarking with just under one month out now from the Ubuntu 22.04 LTS release. From Ubuntu 21.10 there isn't much to get excited about from the performance side with current generation hardware but if you are still on the Ubuntu 20.04 long-term support series you have better chances of seeing some performance enhancements from this new release -- especially if leveraging the default system compiler. At least Ubuntu 22.04 LTS is shipping with newer GNOME components, expanded Wayland use, and a wide variety of usability improvements and new enhancements. Stay tuned for more Ubuntu 22.04 LTS benchmarks on different hardware platforms over the coming weeks.
