A filesystem driver would seem preferable. ...not that I have any plans to use Azure.

Who in their right mind would use Azure?

        Azure is great!
Or would you rather use Oracle Cloud?
Azure is by far the most popular cloud provider. It is easy to work with since it got integration with tools such as Visual Studio. Microsoft is the biggest open source contributor on GitHub.
You can use it either as a IaaS or a PaaS. You can use it together with Docker.

It's semi-proprietary: the core data movement framework that powers it is actually open source: https://github.com/Azure/azure-stora...-data-movement

by number of accounts. how does that make azcopy opensource? it doesn't, see - ms is "opensource contributor" only when it needs to shit on your head.
though ms is bigger contributor to linux kernel than nvidia

Very interesting, should be a good tool to have in combination with the already open-source azure-cli 2.0 (which I currently use to upload/download blobs) and storage explorer.

The only thing remarkable about Azure is how desperate MS people are about selling it. I stand corrected.
