Phoronix: Open 3D Game Engine 2111.2 Released

In addition to closing in on the Godot 4.0 release, another equally exciting effort in the open-source game engine space is the Open 3D Engine originally from the Amazon Lumberyard code and backed by the Linux Foundation and other organizations. Open 3D Engine 2111.2 is out today as the newest stable point release for this less than one year old open-source game engine effort...

Any idea why it seems the Linux foundation is backing the other game engine instead of godot out which seems to be the standard for free open source game engine

Maybe because that is where big donations ($$$$$) are? Also as far as I know this engine is what powered games like Crysis on the past since Amazon obtained the engine from Crytek? But I guess some one will correct me if what I'm saying is wrong.

Probs because it's from Amazon (big name), whereas Godot is community-made.

What's weird is that you seem to exclude the possibility of them managing both. They have lots of software projects... I think if there were a compelling reason, managing this engine probably wouldn't stop them from taking on another. I'd bet you can find examples of loosely competing projects that they manage.

Also, how do you know Godot even approached the Linux Foundation about taking the reins? The Linux Foundation probably doesn't go looking around to take over projects, it would likely have to be petitioned by the project's maintainer(s), or maybe some interested individual/organization for projects that have lost their maintainer.

The members list reads like a most wanted list of criminals: top level { microsoft, tencent, oracle, etc etc etc } , AWS didn't have enough cash to be able to afford top level.
maybe its' better that godot isn't "backed"

yeah no thanks, keep godot free....

            Let’s talk requirements
            • Governance
Project decision-making moves to a model of open, transparent governance. This doesn’t mean the LF takes over and resets your technical direction and vision back to day zero. Instead, we mean working with the project founders to document an open model of collaborative community operation – almost always without disrupting the next release or existing contributor base. The key is to create transparency about who makes decisions and how.
            • Trademarks
Any trademark, git repo accounts, or community assets should be owned neutrally by the foundation entity.
            • Open Source
The intellectual property model should follow open source best practices and be documented – that keeps lawyers happy and enables new contributors to easily engage under clear terms.
            • Community Support
At least one Linux Foundation member is sponsoring the project

Those 2 engines aren't in any way comparable. Two completely different markets.

Godot is what the pinnacle of AAA game engines looked like 10-15 years ago or so. While this does not in any way detract from what godot has done, AAA studios today need better tools. Godot is perfect for a 15 man team to crank out a game but falls apart for a 50 man team, let alone the hundreds of people working on any given AAA title.

Now don't get me wrong; Godot is awesome and works well for it's niche. But some of the things it lacks, specifically, has to do with art pipelines, automated regression testing tools and automated content testing. You know, those things that test that the game is technically fine but doesn't give a crap if it's actually fun to play...
