Cross-platform archive extraction and cross-platform scripting. Those are the two biggest things I can think of. If you've never been suicidal in your life, go install a some Fallout or Elder Scrolls mods on BTRFS and that'll change.

Cross platform or cross file system. They're basically the same thing in this instance.

Does a clear and well-defined definition which characters have an upper case and which have a lower case exist? And is it guaranteed bijective? And if yes, is it true for ASCII only, or actually for unicode?

why can't people become smarter and learn how to write filenames, instead of making filesystems dumber?

Because the ones wrote write the files are not the ones who use it on filesystems with case-sensitivity. So now everyone else can decide to just ignore their stuff or build a solution to make it work. That latter seems like an good solution to me.

Fascism in filenames. That's really the stand you want to take?

You realize that if you don't need this you don't have to use it? It's just another tool in the box you can use to solve your problems.

Why couldn't all those people be smart enough to know to write filenames that would work on Linux and Windows back when they were WinRARing up The Sims mods back on Windows 95 and Windows 98?
