Phoronix: Linux Patches To Begin Removing ReiserFS From Default Kernel Builds

Since March of 2022 the ReiserFS file-system has been deprecated and with Linux 6.6 ReiserFS is marked outright as "obsolete" with plans to remove the file-system from the mainline kernel code-base in 2025. In stepping toward that eventual milestone, a new kernel patch series begins removing ReiserFS from the default kernel configurations...

So ReiserFS went before the Board, was granted parole, and is now in the transition from gen pop to public. That's going to murder the 10's of systems that depend on it Hopefully it's not a stab and hack job that leaves the kernel full of holes.

Oh boy, a ReiserFS article! I can't wait to read all the on-topic comments about the merits of the file system, and probably nothing else

No, it's more like ReiserFS was in need of some special maintenance and could not remain with the general population, much like its creator.

Yeah, it's clickbait for Michael, but hopefully it makes him some ad money. (It's kind of like community service for Hans.)
Seriously though, the good news is that anyone using ReiserFS can do so until 2026 with LTS kernels. The system works well so that the loss of one person (whether they got run over by a bus or went crazy and killed someone) doesn't cause issue.

            A truly tragic story.

There's no need to keep supporting that old filesystem. Time to bury it and move on.

Tragic, but not for everyone. I've seen at least a few witnesses of hard drives that have stopped showing any signs of life after they were being formatted with ReiserFS.

But for all the others, let's pay some respect with a proper funeral.

Well, ReiserFS isn't due to be removed from mainline until 2025, and then can be found in LTS releases. So it gets a few more years of painful life before it's gone forever.

Sixteen minutes, Brother. That's all it took.
