This FreeRDP, is it packaged natively in any distro, like Debian for example?

Great! I wish I'd discovered it earlier. I was using x11vnc for couple of years but it was unstable. Now I am using commercial RealVNC Server which require login and account.
Maybe it's time to revert to open source solution again.

I've started to use proprietary NoMachine this year. I prefer it over rdp / vnc at the moment.

It's the small stuff like locking keyboard and mouse. Allowing me full access to meta-keys and not taking me out of the remote connection when I press alt-tab.

Once freeRDP3 is stable I'll try it out again.

PS: For work I'm still happy with tmux (open) & vscode (proprietary)
