Phoronix: Ikey Doherty's Serpent OS Continues Building Up Its Rust Infrastructure

Ikey Doherty who is known for his work starting Solus Linus as well as the Budgie desktop while also formerly working on Intel's Clear Linux and other open-source software contributions has most recently been working on his newest endeavour: Serpent OS. A end-of-year development summary has now been posted that outlines the latest work on this Linux distribution...

Phoronix, Linux Hardware Reviews, Linux hardware benchmarks, Linux server benchmarks, Linux benchmarking, Desktop Linux, Linux performance, Open Source graphics, Linux How To, Ubuntu benchmarks, Ubuntu hardware, Phoronix Test Suite

This is really cool, but unfortunately Ikey's track record of long-term maintenance of his projects is pretty poor. It's hard to invest time into his ecosystem when you don't know he'll get bored of it in a year or two's time.

Awesome news, using Solus as main driver for years now. Most solid distro out there.

Serpent OS isn't planning to create "a general purpose home-use distribution"
Any idea what is the plan then ?

          Yes.

However, there are some things we need to build out and polish up before it make sense to share said plan.

          Stay tuned.

yeah, not many run their open source projects for a decade or two, ... https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iV1VcWr6cVE

The video seems unrelated. Did you mean to link something else?

Serpent OS should adopt COSMIC instead GNOME. Both Pop OS! and Serpent OS have many focus similarities, even more than both projects are focused on Rust.

mmstick You are a COSMIC developer, right? What do you think about it? I think their effort may fit quite well into Pop OS!, it would help to improve both projects.

ermo What do your project and you think about this too? Of course, both parties are equally interesting in a possible collaboration.

FTR, Ikey is Lead and Founder, so he has the final say.

I know COSMIC is on Ikey's radar. We'll see how it pans out.

ermo What's the current status about a x86-64-v3 or x86-64-v2 as baseline? There was some back and forth on this. Also sunnyflunk criticized CachyOS in a blog post for doing whole repo builds with x86-64-v3 while his own data didn't back up his claims as it showed a net improvement overall. Was there more testing in the meantime and are there any news to share on this topic?
