Phoronix: GNOME's Sandboxing Tech "XDG-App" Now Renamed To "Flatpak"

For the past number of months GNOME developers have been working on XDG-App as their sandboxing mechanism for desktop applications built atop Linux standards. XDG-App is now no more but say hello to Flatpak...

How about AppPack? Or AppContainerPack? Or XDG-Pack?
Because it's about applications and how they are packaged.

Flatpak sounds like predestined failure. XDG-App like a cool feature with a future.

Sounds as if they've given up on being 'cross-desktop', which isn't surprising given the recent direction of GNOME.

Or I might be overthinking it, and it's just a more user-directed name.

Shit name. Everyone uses "App" for everything and understands it nowadays, no one knows what a "Flatpak" could possibly be. Maybe a video codec?

Meanwhile on Windows 10 no one has a problem with "UWP Apps".

I would have gone with something simple like AppBox.

And now for something completely different:

Looks better to me. XDG-App was too cryptic.

Would they have a problem with "UWP-App Apps"? After all, "app" was part of the old name xdg-app.

yes, you are overthinking it. main problem of xdg-app name is that it only explains what it is to technical people. flatpack reasoning is in message from previous thread https://lists.freedesktop.org/archiv...ay/000197.html

Flatpacks are those things from Ikea that make the furniture really easy to distribute, unpack, and install
if you consider this, this would apply even more suggestion into cross-desktop/distro. also, KDE is following the Gnome path as well http://www.proli.net/2016/02/24/kde-...ns-on-xdg-app/
