Yup. A lot of people tend to be bad at evaluating what is or isn't a good metric. A poll on a forum is only going to poll the type of people who would visit that forum. Polling Phoronix users would give you very different results and polling OMG Ubuntu will give you very different results from those. Outside of distro's phoning home to report a user's usage of different DEs, it's going to be hard to determine exact percentages. But yea, most people are just going to stick with the distro's default and considering Ubuntu is the most popular distro, Gnome is going towards the top. Technically SteamDeck user's would be KDE users now but most of them never use the desktop mode anyway.
