Phoronix: GNOME Mutter 46 Beta A Win For Gamers & VM Users, Other Last Minute Changes Too

Just a word of warning - the normal feature freezes do not strictly apply to mutter/gnome-shell so it is possible for other features to make it in.

(if VRR does make it in, the gnome-settings UI for it however will then require a freeze exception).

Maybe one day they'll add quadrant snapping

Why would you want to see more than two windows at the same time? That sounds like an advanced feature that would only confuse ordinary users. The pro gurus could use Windows, macOS, XFCE, KDE, or something else instead.

The patch that added direct scanout for scaled and cropped surfaces created some "non-trivial conflicts" with the dynamic triple buffering patch so triple buffering couldn't be merged.

Because only Gnome can make it work well and not be confusing. Let the puzzle lovers use KDE or Windows or a pocket calculator instead.

if you took the time to read the motivation that drives the Gnome team towards certain choices, you would have save some time in useless sarcasm.

They actually do want to add proper tiling, it’s just the usual “no one’s actually stepped up to do it”. Here’s a blog post about it. https://blogs.gnome.org/tbernard/202...ow-management/

Shell 46 just seems like a basic bug fix release - I’m actually surprised how little actually changed. Notifications include a header and that’s about the only noticeable change... Mutter 46 however, all the changes there are way more exciting.

Question is - do you want evolution or Revolution? It's a pity that VRR is not a priority but other than that it is better to get smaller changes for perfectly usable desktop.

They already tried revolution way of doing things with Gnome 3 and ppl were not happy 😁
