Another "put the book in context" thing I found. It turns out that Eric S. Raymond, who not only lived through that era but gave feedback before it went to print, also wrote a retrospective in 2008.

As the commenters were quick to point out, he's was too accustomed to taking some of Linux's flaws for granted in his estimation of where Linux had arrived by 2008, but he's mostly addressing progress rather than destination, so it's still a good read.
