No amount of equalization will fix that. Headphones or external speakers of reasonable quality is the only solution.

if you have a 5.1 output, you can enable it on the system sound configuration. The path to that depends of the desktop you are using. I can explain the path if are using KDE.

No need for expensive sound card, no need for some fancy headphones. It's something that some smartphones have (xperias or xiaomi one's)
No idea, I downmix everything to mono anyway.

The first three UI related comments in this thread sum up why you can never please everyone. Widget makers should pick their style and stick with it no matter the opinions it seems.

For all the "padding etc." people, it's open source, feel free to help.

Simple stereo graphic eq should be killed with fire. It was ok during the early days of WinAMP, but now decent stereo / 5.1 setups and measurement mics are cheap and ubiquitous. Many of my friends have their HTPC plugged into MiniDSP. The same configs work with PA. We can share the mics to save some moneys. The mic and parametric eq help even if your gear sucked.

Maybe you should re-read his post, 'cause he didn't say that it should switch to GTK2, but that it should be made to look like a GTK2 app.

i.e. make a modern Fiat 600 that looks like the old Fiat 600 instead of a Fiat Panda, just to give an example.

Been using it for the bass boost feature for some months now (after accidentally discovering it on the archlinux repo), and ohh boy an application like this was surely missing on the linux world for a lot of years. Finally a decent implementation of bass boost along with all the sound manipulation features it has

Wouldn't it be easier to buy a subwoofer? PA supports 2.1 LFE channel mixing by default. Just set your LP filter x-over point.

I have a subwoofer for years... But this application makes it as loud as you would like without distorting the sound (very much)
