Tried Niri last week. Played with it a bit. Looks promising. Browsing its files on github, it seemed like Niri needs systemd to launch. Can confirm it's not necessary.

I found Niri on Github a while back (back when it was still on version 0.1.0-alpha), and I've been using it ever since. The way the window management works is just great for a laptop-sized screen.
