    So now we have wlroots and mir, which one will be easier to pickup by projects like xfce and mate...

            Source? Mir developers have been porting mate-panel to wayland using the wlr-layer-shell protocol. It works on both Mir and wlroots-based compositors.
            AFAIK the MATE developers themselves have done almost nothing for porting MATE to wayland.
