Some niche hobby project that's around since 2014, nobody ever heard of and without the backing of Valve and the Khronos Group. Waste of time.

This is just not correct. Have a closer look at any of Khronos presentations about Vulkan Portability (like the one from GDC 2018) and you'll see multiple mentions of gfx-rs project. Not to mention that Phoronix, HN, and other news sources frequently discuss gfx-portability. As for the backing, gfx-rs isn't backed by Valve indeed, but relation to Khronos officially is pretty much the same. Only difference is where the code is hosted and how aggressively it's advertised.
