Just think of it as the part of Mesa/Gallium that interfaces with libdrm and the kernel.

The radeonsi driver itself just deals with compiling shaders, figuring out which buffers to allocate/map/copy/whatever, but the winsys actually interfaces with libdrm and the specific kernel driver in use.

There are two major kernel drivers for the R600 and SI cards:
      1) radeon (for the R600 and SI/CI generations [GCN 1.0 and 1.1]). Possibly also handles r300 and earlier.
      2) amdgpu (originally for GCN 1.2, but also supports GCN 1.1 now [possibly hidden behind a build flag], and GCN 1.0 soon)

The goal seems to currently be to get all GCN-based chips running on the amdgpu kernel driver. This will make it easier to get vulkan and other new features running on earlier generations of the GCN chips, and may allow the earlier GCN chips to run on the new AMDGPU-PRO drivers as well (maybe...).

Ok, thanks. So I have no idea what this news is about, but it’s progress I guess .
