A part of me wonders why WSL2 is going the route of using mesa for vaapi guests, and why crosvm's virtio-video (im not sure if it is actually in the virtio spec yet, haven't checked for a long time) uses the v4l2 route afaik crosvm uses mesa for both android and linux now. maybe it's better for some other guests down the line?

What makes you think that mesa is hostile to closed source platforms? Historically they have not been, and they've specifically chosen their license to allow for proprietary code to use it.

because people cannot fathom mesa being used outside of linux, they seem to think that only something completely foss should be allowed in, (despite gpu firmware often not being foss ecosystem but thats them not me)

I'm still waiting for all this love Microsoft claims to have for Linux. Everything they have done has been around making Linux work on top of windows. When will Microsoft start showering Linux with love by helping make windows work on top of Linux?

Let's see them update their licenses to allow themselves to invest in wine development. Maybe port directX over to Linux as well.

Let's have some equality, fairness, and equity here Microsoft. Share the love. It doesn't have to be about making only windows better. How about making both better and fully compatible with each other? No hate, right Microsoft?

they already do in the way of sponsoring qemu.

why would they support a direct competitor? any why bother porting d3d over? we already have vulkan, and dxvk and vkd3d will suit our needs fine.

microsoft DOES support linux they make contributions to the kernel, the MS hired devs take part in mesa technical discussions and make contributions to mesa that everyone can use, or use as a guideline. they have been active in porting a lot of their applications to linux. they sponsor many foss programs.

you people are the definition of give an inch and they'll take a mile. first and foremost they are a business like anyone else. of course the work towards their financial interest, but they have been migrating in a way to do so while also supporting FOSS initiatives. how about you ask for MS to lay off their entire staff and donate all their code and money to foss too while you are at it?

I always laugh when people bring this up. Do you really think that "love" means they are going to do altruistic things to help linux out of the goodness of their hearts? Or does it just mean they will help out linux in ways that help themselves? You know, like every other company on the planet.

It's not like Intel helps develop linux because they "love" it. They do it because they want to make money selling hardware to people that want to run linux. IBM and Red Hat don't work on linux just to donate their spare money on some project that won't help them. They do it so they can get a return on their investments.

Microsoft is doing the exact same thing as everyone else. Working on linux in ways that help themselves out.

In fact, that's the entire premise behind the linux ecosystem that Linus Torvalds set up. He designed it to work this way, so that users could benefit from the selfish self-serving motives of these corporations. His success in capturing that is why linux has been so successful over the years, compared to, say, BSD.

That's the magic of Richard Stallman's GPL, which Linus decided to use for his kernel.
Honestly: RMS should get a nobel price for it.
