  • Carrizo driver issue

    I bought new laptop with A10-8700p, trying to figure out the correct driver for it.
    I installed ubuntu 15.10, following scenarios I tried.

    1. With stock kernel, no driver configuration it runs too hot reach about 70 degree quickly.
    2. Catalyst driver fail to load, gives segfault.
    3. Stock with amgdpu driver from padoka ppa works better than other options, though it is not as cool as windows, but it does not constantly heat up.
    4. kernel 4.5 rc 6 with amdgpu driver from padoka also heat a lot, not as much as 1, but reaches 60+ temp. Don't understand why it is heating that much,

    Looks like I've to wait till 4.6 kernel release to get decent performance from it.

    In windows temperature never goes beyond 60 even when playing Dirt Rally. Normally temperature remains between 45 to 50.

    If anybody else is using carrizo apus please let me know which drivers you are using, Thanks.

    I'm getting kernel errors, I'll like to wait for 4.6 before making linux primary os.
    Michael bridgman do you have suggestion for me?

      I don't see any fan control options in bios. Fan speed to vary but temperature remains much higher.
      Kernel 4.6 rc released, so will try that soon, it has power play enabled so I think it will improve situation.
      Quite surprised that google search don't reveal other people facing this issue and linux carrizo users.

        not sure about rpm as I don't any utility installed for check that, but fan in linux was very noisy.
        Just installed kernel 4.6 rc1 and also updated amdgpu driver, using it for about 2hrs cpu temperature is very much near windows, fan is also not making much noise.

        Thanks for help.

          After 4.6 I don't think I will need to tweak it. I used 4.6 for few hours and it worked quite well.
          But now I'm facing much bigger issue, when I boot next day the root file system is corrupt, don't know what causes it to corruption. Is there any bug in the kernel or Extfsd drivers? I'm using ext4 file system for both /root and /home and it was mounted with write permission in windows 10.

          Thanks will try Xsensors to compare it with windows.

            Have been quite busy recently, got some time so I installed xubuntu 16.04. It is working fine so far, didn't installed any game though. The only issue is the shut down is not working, process is completed without error but it does not power off laptop. I tried with "init 0" but same result.

              bridgman any comment on shut down issue? I think it has to do something with driver.

                It was working fine with Ubuntu 15.10, I didn't mean just gpu driver.
                I'm waiting for kernel 4.6 packages to appear to try. May be I should report issue to Ubuntu.

                  I build installed kernel 4.6, still same problem.

                    i've a notebook with A10 8700p + r7 m360
                    same problem of temperature on linux.
                    temperature increase a lot with the minimum effort of cpu.
                    catalyst driver has good temperature, but is dead, no more update.
                    i've tried the hybrid amdgpu-pro driver, but is worse than amdgpu full open, has very high temperature (also 80°) and very bad performance(worse than opensource amdgpu).
                    now i'm using amdgpu driver with this kernel parameter

                    amdgpu.dpm=1

                    seems that the temperature are better and seems that firefox has no more freeze.
                    i'm not sure if it is only a case or this really help.

                    try add this parameter to kernel and tell me
                    (i'm using ubuntu 16.04 with linux kernel 4.6, with updated firmware).
                    these are the parameter that i'm using on my grub config

                    Code:
                    GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash amdgpu.dpm=1 radeon.dpm=1 i8042.dumbkbd amdgpu.powerplay=1 amdgpu.sched_jobs=64 amdgpu.exp_hw_support=1"
