I did not have to do this for sound to work.

googling shows very few hits. One indicates 0,1 enables only the graphics card whereas 1,0 loads the onboard graphics first. Wonder what 1,1 does?

I have no problems with optical, although I'm not sure its SPDIF. The stereo receivers shows it as digital. To get optical I tell it which card to use.

Make sure the optical (IEC958) is unmuted in alsamixer.

For me this is card 0 Device 1 so I direct to 0,1. 0,0 is regular analog. 1,0 is HDMI port. So for optical, use:

mplayer -ao alsa:device=hw=0,1 yoursong

Also make sure plastic end covers on optical are removed. I thought mine didn't have any but I was able to pull one off. As soon as I pulled off one end it worked. I pulled off other end to.

Sound seems to work a little better over hdmi with catalyst 8.9. aRTS, mplayer, and xine are all working. Mythtv sometimes having graphical problems as wtih 8.6-8.8 but not always but that's for a different forum.
