    Is this backportable to RDNA2 and 1 or does it depend on exclusive RDNA3 functionality?

      Off topic but some might be interested: Looks like RadeonSi will unfortunately disable glthread for both Mesa 23.x and 22.3 at least for now, seemingly because of some issues.

        Earlier RDNA hardware seem to lack functionality for this. AMD stated in the RFC: For Navi 3X and above.

        And keeping this in mind, all the RDNA2 deals (which are still overpriced in my region) just became way less attractive.​

          ms178 we don't even know a potential, relative performance uplift for this tech yet. It'll probably be CPU dependent with weaker systems benefiting more.

          As for RDNA2 deals - store pricing and MSRP are still horrible, but the used market can have nice offers depending on where you live. If you find something along the lines of a used 6800XT AIB design for 500~550$, go for it. It's not getting better than that in terms of bang for the buck.

            We know from bpf and io_uring that roundtrips within the Kernel can get expansive, that scheduling is probably being shifted more to the hardware directly and that it should improve latency more or less dramatically in addition to taxing the CPU less. Just connect the dots that aren't said in the RFC for obvious economic reasons...

            I would not consider a 6800 XT at these prices any longer with RDNA3 equivalents and a potential price war just around the corner.

              ms178 And I'll be curiously watching if it will ever come to said price war that I have been wishing for for more than half a decade at this point. Anyhow, whatever your next HW choice will be - may it make you happy!
