Phoronix: Linux 6.10 Features Expected From The NTSYNC Driver To Performance Optimizations

Barring any last minute reservations by Linus Torvalds, Linux 6.9 stable should release later today. In turn the Linux 6.10 merge window will then open for the next two weeks and already some early pull requests have been submitted for this next kernel version. Here is a look at some of what to expect with the Linux 6.10 kernel...

It seems sad that it's necessary to implement the NT sync primitives but, in the context of being able to run windows games, is very cool. Between this and the more widespread explicit sync support in Wayland, we might actually be getting closer to a day where games work without the usual kludges/crashes/random bugs/etc. It sucks to see certain games resort to installing a rootkit anticheat though...

"The Panthor DRM driver is being merged". One less excuse to find the time to bless the RK3588 SBC with pure opensource goodness.

The NTSYNC driver should be merged for emulating Windows NT synchronization primitives for speeding up Windows games running on Wine / Steam Play (Proton).
        based on what ?

Greg Kroah-Hartman only merged 3 patches out of 30 and the discussion seems to be stalled at the moment. see https://lore.kernel.org/lkml/2024041...deweavers.com/

Yeah, exactly. A ton of related ntsync patches are still not added. I found that out trying to build only patches from that misc repo and that was far from enough.

Can you summarize what is stalled though? They didn't figure out some approach yet?

Reminds of this old meme again (long before they were called memes).
Where they compare "Windows" with a kids toy to play around with and "Linux" with a advanced sports car that's never finished...

going over the thread at LKML it looks like Peter Zijlstra are expressing some issues with the locking code.

Will these be solved before the window closes?

Stupid analogy. Linux doesn't need NT patches at all, but they would be nice improvement for Windows games.
