    Companies who want to make profits off other people's work are perfectly fine with GPL - they don't put much time and money into development, so have no problem with giving away their changes, if there are any. It's companies who intend to do something innovative who have the problem.

      They are free to inovate, just not based on GPL licensed work (unless they publish their changes). If they have a problem with that, they are free to start from scratch.
